Hydrogen, mood and everyday stress: one careful study

1 September 2026 · 5 min read · by Agnieszka & Piotr, H2 Clinic

Many of the people who visit our clinic are not athletes at all. They are people in their fifties, sixties and seventies who describe the same cluster of things: busy heads, shallow rest, a sense of running slightly hot all the time. So when guests ask whether there is any research connecting hydrogen with mood or everyday stress, it deserves a straight answer.

There is some — less than the sports literature, but one study in particular is worth describing properly, both for what it found and for how carefully it was run.

The Osaka study, in plain English

In 2018, Kei Mizuno and colleagues at Osaka City University and the RIKEN research institute published a double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial. Twenty-six healthy adults — thirteen women, thirteen men, average age around 34 — drank 600 ml of hydrogen-rich water a day for four weeks, and separately 600 ml of placebo water for four weeks, without knowing which was which.

Two things moved in the hydrogen phase compared with placebo. Scores on the K6 — a standard questionnaire that screens for low mood and anxiety — improved more. And measurements of autonomic nervous function showed lower sympathetic activity at rest: less of the body’s accelerator pedal, so to speak, while simply sitting still.

Why we find this study interesting

Three reasons, none of them a sales pitch.

  • It studied healthy people. Not patients, not a disease — adults with ordinary jobs and ordinary stress. That matches who we actually serve, and it is the only kind of study we will build claims-adjacent language on.
  • The design was serious. Double-blind and crossover, so every participant was their own control. For a field full of loose studies, that rigour stands out.
  • It measured something you can relate to. Mood questionnaires and resting nervous-system activity are closer to daily life than a molecule count in a blood panel.

And why it settles nothing

Twenty-six people is a small sample. Four weeks is a short window. The participants drank hydrogen-rich water, whereas a session with us involves breathing hydrogen-enriched air — related, but not the same, and nobody should quietly swap one for the other in an argument. Above all, a single study is a single study: its findings need replicating in larger groups before anyone treats them as established. The authors themselves framed the results as suggestive, and so do we.

We tell guests this study exists. We refuse to tell them it proves anything. If a quiet hour with us leaves you feeling rested, wonderful — but the honest claim is the rest itself, not a rewired nervous system.

Where this leaves a visit to us

A session at H2 Clinic is forty-five unhurried minutes in a recliner with a book, music, or your eyes closed — while the research on what the hydrogen itself contributes carries on maturing. Hydrogen therapy is not a medical treatment and is not a substitute for advice from your GP or another qualified healthcare professional. If low mood or anxiety is genuinely weighing on you, your GP is the right first conversation — truly.

Curious about the wider science? Start with molecular hydrogen and oxidative stress, or read what a session actually feels like. If you are local and over fifty, we keep the practical details in one place on hydrogen therapy for the over-50s in Somerset.
